About Woodard Bay Kayak Launch

Exploring the Calm and Scenic Woodard Bay: A Paddling Oasis in Washington's South Puget Sound

Nestled in the heart of Thurston County, Washington, Woodard Bay is a picturesque coastal bay that has gained recognition as a premier destination for kayakers and other paddlers seeking to immerse themselves in the region's natural wonders. Situated just a short drive from the cities of Olympia and Lacey, this tranquil body of water offers a serene and protected environment for those looking to explore the South Puget Sound by kayak.

Woodard Bay's Unique Appeal The bay's sheltered character and relatively calm waters make it an appealing choice for paddlers of all skill levels. Compared to many other waterways in the South Puget Sound region, Woodard Bay experiences relatively moderate wind exposure, with breezes typically ranging from 10-15 mph on most days. This, combined with the generally light motorboat traffic, allows kayakers to fully immerse themselves in the peaceful surroundings and enjoy the glassy conditions that often prevail on the water.

reviewsWhat Paddlers Say

The boat ramp is great early in the morning, and it's free with a discover pass. It can get busy throughout the day and there's not a whole lot of room to maneuver trailers around. You have to be conscious of the tide with larger boats because when the tide is out there is very little water underneath. The single ramp is decently long and very easy to navigate, with no competition from other ramps. It looked like a great place for kayaks and SUPs. I like this landing better than Pt. Defiance because it's small, but I have to give it a 4 out of 5 because of how it can become so crowded that there's no room to maneuver. They need a wider turnaround for trailers that doesn't get people parking in it. Be sure to get here early.

Great view of Mt. Rainier, both with the risings on the opposite side near the mountain and settings which light up the mountain from the opposite side of the sky where the height of the mountain leaves it the last to lose the light of the setting sun, and all with the foreground of Puget Sound and the lands beyond unfettered by the "bootprints" of mankind (natural landscape opposite of Luhr's Landing), ofttimes with seagulls and other fowl to enhance photographs.

One of my favorite places to go and watch the water and seals birds and other wildlife. You can see Tacoma Mt Rainer and the Olympics. Beautiful and usually peaceful.
